Literacy and numeracy skills are a key focus, especially in the early years (Foundation – Year 2). Explicit teaching of writing genres, oral language activities, reading, spelling and comprehension activities are a daily occurrence within the classroom Literacy Blocks.

Pilgrim School uses the phonetic-based Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar programs for its Foundation to Year 6 classes.

Mathematics is taught in early years with hands-on experiences and equipment to explain and understand different concepts.

Hands-on materials continue to be used in the teaching of Mathematics in middle and upper primary, but the use of manipulatives reduces as concepts become more abstract in Years 5 and 6. Exercises, problem solving and investigations are all used in the Mathematics program.
