Basic literacy and numeracy skills are a key focus at Pilgrim School, especially in the junior primary years. Explicit teaching of writing genres, oral language activities, reading, spelling and comprehension activities are a daily occurrence within the Literacy Block in classes.

Pilgrim School uses the phonetic-based Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar programs for its Foundation to Year 6 classes.

Mathematics is taught in junior primary with hands-on experiences and equipment to explain and understand different concepts.

Hands-on materials continue to be used in the teaching of Mathematics in middle and upper primary, but the use of manipulatives reduces as concepts become more abstract in Years 6 and 7. Exercises, problem solving and investigations are all used in the Mathematics program.
